- In Season Mill prices will be rising.
"In Season has delivered and we are fully stocked in bulk feeds.
We have restocked the Organic Goat Grain, Poultry Starter and Hen Scratch.
In Season has sent us their annual price increase and is allowing us one
more order
under old pricing. They really support our model and appreciate that I
always pay the
truck on delivery (and the Food Shed at Kingston Farm is now handing
their wonderful
pastries off to the driver to eat on the ferry on the way back).
I have not gone over the full details of the increase but it is roughly
$55.00 per tonne.
Bags are up around .65 each.
Organic alfalfa pellets went up the most $160 per tonne and $3.00 per bag!!
Up until now, In Season has offered Kingston Farm and Feed no surcharge for
soy free layer as they encouraged us to compare to the competing mill at
Scratch and Peck.
They have now indicated they are going to charge us the same as the
other customers,
$50/tonne more than soy feeds. I will see if we can negotiate on that.
Let me know if folks are going to still want soy free from In Season
after the increase.
The alfalfa stores well so if you are feeding or fertilizing with it,
order now.
If you buy a full half tonne of any feed you save 5% over the bulk scoop
your own price."

LEGISLATIVE WARNING ABOUT E2SHB 2253 - SEPA Streamlining
Public Senate hearing, 21 February 2012.
Mike Rundlett (mwrundlett@westag.org), the Environmental Affairs Manager of Western Washington Agricultural Association, writes:
"This bill has changed dramatically. In earlier versions we worked collaboratively with the bill prime sponsor and others to get the habitat restoration and mitigation projects categorical exemption narrowed to not include prime ag lands. However, the new latest version - E2SHB 2253 - again generalizes the exemption and turns it over w/o this restriction to WDOE to write the rules.
The new language can now be found in a different section of the bill. Section 1, part 3(a)(ii) allows environmental mitigation projects to be exempt from SEPA. Now this is quite clever, because what the overall bill allows is all that urban infill without SEPA review, AND then the mitigation is also allowed without SEPA overview. The consequence is that those who live, farm, and recreate in the rural areas, get the urban mitigation placed on our farm fields, pastures and other working and recreational lands without SEPA interference and no way to object.
Remember when SEPA was welcomed by local government because it also provided for public input and involvement in the project decision process. Well, not with this bill. It is 'streamlining' public participation right out of local government decisions on growth and development projects.
Not good for the future of agriculture or our rural working lands!!!
This bill needs to be opposed."

RELIEF FOR 2011 FARMING LOSSES
The Department of Agriculture has approved 2011 agricultural disaster designations in Washington for the counties of Clallam, Clark, Franklin, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Klickitat, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, Stevens, Wahkiakum, Whatcom and Yakima.
This means that working farms who can demonstrate loss of income caused by weather conditions in 2011 are eligible to be considered for Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans (EM) and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE).
FSA will consider each EM application on its own merit by taking into account the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability. Local FSA offices can provide affected farmers and ranchers with additional information.

In Season Organic Mill prices increase on 13 February 2012.
Harley of Kingston Farm and Feed is ordering now off the present
PRICE LIST!
Harley says:
"I went up to Abbotsford yesterday for a quick tour of the In Season
Organic Mill on the way to the big B.C. Ag show. They tipped me off that the prices are
going to go up "perhaps substantially" on February 13. They raise prices every 12-18
months, the last one was this time last year. As in past years, the mill manager has let us know this in advance so we
can stock up under the old prices. I will be putting in a sizeable order VERY soon, so if you are
interested in stocking up for Spring, let me know.
These feeds store well for three months, but I would not try and go much
beyond that except on whole individual grains (whole oats is one). We always turn our bulk bales
over within 30 days of delivery.
"If you have any needs that are not listed on our usual stock of bulk and
bags, let me know. They have hog and dairy mixes, as well as an array of individual grains.
"Let me know as soon as you can if you want any bulk bales (save 5% if you
scoop your own bulk) or have any bagged needs. My guess is we will see a 10% increase in the new list."
(posted 28 January 2012)
-
Harley says:
"We now have about 50 bags of Scratch and Peck's Grown in Washington
NON-GMO Organic but not yet Certified Layer (expected soon) feed in the barn.
Also, fully stocked with all the usual bulk In Season Farms Organic
whole grain feeds. We also have in bags:
Organic Poultry Starter, Hen Scratch, Livestock Grain, Kelp, DE (Diatomaceous Earth), Oyster
Shell, Organic Fertilizers, Poultry and Goat Nutribalancers from Fertrell's and much more."
Harley also advises that Scratch and Peck is applying for full certification as organic and non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms). When they receives these certifications, their operational costs will increase, and their prices will rise accordingly.

HELP CHANGE KITSAP COUNTY SIGN LAWS

Read the current regulations in the County Code at
www.codepublishing.com/wa/kitsapcounty/
go to "Title 17 Zoning", browse down to "17.445 signs".
Send SERIOUS ideas and suggestions to:
Larry Keeton (lkeeton@co.kitsap.wa.us), or
Steve Heacock (sheacock@co.kitsap.wa.us)
(No Larry or Steve bashing, please. Those codes have been in place for a long time. These guys didn't do it. They are trying to fix things.)
Larry sends the following comment:
"The Kitsap County Commissioners adopted nine Comprehensive plan policies that will be translated into development regulations related to the county's food system, especially agricultural. The Department of Community Development will be working with stakeholders on this endeavor. Associated with this will be proposed revisions to the county's current sign code. The DCD leadership has been gathering issues with the current code and understands the importance of signs to small business and agricultural/food system operations, yet must also recognize that not everyone wants a billboard advertisements along the roadways. If you [have] some thoughts and ideas, you can email them to Larry Keeton (lkeeton@co.kitsap.wa.us) or Steve Heacock (sheacock@co.kitsap.wa.us). The anticipated completion of this entire project is no later than March, 2013."

The program, currently running in Skagit and San Juan Counties, may be expanded to other counties, if sufficient farmer interest is present!
Ethan Schaffer of the Small Farm Intern Coalition clarifies that new legislation "will probably only be able to expand the program to 6 or 7 counties this year", not statewide (yet). So it becomes something of a popularity contest. Those counties that exhibit the most interest among farms that gross less than $250,000 revenue per year could stand to win.
Please try to get word out to small farms in Kitsap County so we might be in the running to get this program.
Interested farms should contact Ethan Schaffer of the Small Farm Intern Coalition at ethan@growfood.org.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS - YOU CAN HELP!
Small farmers often guide potential customers to their sales point by placing sandwich-board signs on the shoulder of nearby roads during business hours. This has been part of our rural culture for years. (Realtors use the same advertising method for open houses.)
However, the county recently fined a small nursery owner along Hansville Road $1500 for having her signs out. It seems there is a county ordinance against such signage. The nursery owner immediately warned other small businesses in the area, and most have removed their signs. As a result, customer traffic has dropped drastically, and once-healthy businesses are now in trouble. Multiple attempts to arrange signage within the limits of existing county regulations have failed.
(Per Steve Mount of Kitsap County Code Compliance Department, on 13 Dec 2011: "...the nursery was NOT fined $1500.00 dollars and the amount that was settled did not exceed $75 in consideration for mitigating the circumstances of the violation.")
To read the county regulations, go to the Kitsap County Code at www.codepublishing.com/wa/kitsapcounty/, chapter 17.445. "Prohibitions" are in subsection 070.
In response, the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council (GHAAC) has invited Larry Keeton, Kitsap County Director of the Department of Community Development, to its 10 January 2012 meeting to address the issue.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to present a strong community reponse in support of our farmers and small local businesses! Please make time to attend the meeting!

AS OF 11 OCTOBER 2011:
- 1st cutting: we have about 1 ton left, but can possibly get more. $13.70/bale, ~11-12% moisture content, ~35-40% alfalfa. ~85# bales, 24 bales per ton, more grass seed heads (higher nutrition). My hard-keeper aged thoroughbred gelding is gaining weight on this, and loving it.
- 2nd cutting: we have 6 bales left. $15.20/bale, ~14-15% moisture content, ~75% alfalfa. 95-100# bales, 23 bales per ton. Prefered by llama / alpaca owners for lower nutrition, and mule owners for softer texture.
- 3rd cutting: we have 2 tons left. Same characteristics as 2nd cutting (and just as pretty.) We can possibly get more.

RECYCLING
A note on shredded paper from Kitsap Public Works:
"The best way to manage shredded paper is to compost it, or put it in a worm bin. Do not put in curbside recycle carts or mixed paper bins. Shredding cuts the paper fibers, making them too short to recycle. The short fibers end up as waste at the mill and may cause the bales to be rejected. Shredded paper may be disposed of in your garbage."

FARM RESCUE PROJECTS IN KITSAP COUNTY (new on our links page)
- Hansville Farm Project
Located in North Kitsap, this group is working for community support and funding
to acquire the old Pope and Talbot tree farm between Driftwood Keys and Buck Lake County Park
to establish community-owned organic farmland. Available land: up to 144 acres.
They are developing their strategy now. They need volunteers interested in the welfare of our region.
and donations to accumulate purchase funds and qualify for grant monies.
- Petersen Farm near Silverdale
The Great Peninsula Conservancy group, in partnership with the estate of Gerald Petersen,
is attempting to preserve 120 acres of the 167-acre Petersen Farm as a fully-functional, working farm.
As we all know, farm land near Silverdale has been profligately overbuilt and paved.
This is one of the best chances available to retain some country in the area.
It will also allow extension of the Clear Creek Trail to the north, and protect the stretch
of Clear Creek which runs directly thru the property.
Please help one or both of these outstanding projects, with time and / or money!
There is a significant resurgence of interest in local food and local farms,
but we need to preserve the farmland to support the interest!

YAKIMA HAY NOW AVAILABLE
Our hay is from Clark Kramer in Yakima, and is a
certified weed-free, organically managed grass/alfalfa mix.
(Weed-free is what you need for riding or packing into the National Forests.
Organically-managed means not having to worry about any unnatural chemicals impacting your animals' health.)
1st cutting: we have 3 tons. $13.70/bale, ~11-12% moisture content, ~35-40% alfalfa
~85# bales, 24 bales per ton, more seed heads (higher nutrition - but less alfalfa)
2nd cutting: we have 4 tons. $15.20/bale, ~14-15% moisture content, ~75% alfalfa
95-100# bales, 23 bales per ton
Additional information:
Due to state laws regarding the purchase of hay by cooperatives, the hay may only be purchased by members of the Kingston Farm & Garden Co-op.
All pricing is based on the per bale price charged us by the grower. No discounts for buying by the ton.
Cost to you is as follows:
hay cost + hauling cost + unloading & stacking costs (the haulers have a conveyor belt!) + $1/bale
This is higher than the original estimate, because we did not have enough commitments to order the 28 ton load and get the associated discount. Lacking enough storage space, we could not buy such a large quantity "on spec".
This is STILL a great price for great quality, but since the Co-op's "margin" is so small, we need to sell it all to make this work!
Hay is presently stored in the big shed near the Giving Garden - call Paul at 360-809-3467 to arrange access.

New on the Members Favorites page -
a link to the USDA Food Desert Locator.
This is part of a national initiative to bring sources of healthy food into underserved areas.
North Kitsap has no "food deserts", by this reckoning, although parts of Bremerton and Port Orchard are mapped.
Unfortunately for those of us who are Walmart-phobic, it is the large, national chains
that are being tapped to solve this problem.

ANOTHER GROUP BUY OF LARGE-VOLUME POULTRY FEEDERS,
Harley of the Organic Feed Buying Group says:
"[We are ordering more] 50# Kuhl Range Feeders...
They come in at $90 each with shipping [if we order 6]...
(Buying one alone costs about $120 due to high UPS dimensional
shipping rate). The good thing is that you can toss in a lot of small
items you need from Cutler Supply for free [shipping,] if they fit
in the huge box the feeders come in.
Take a look at their website and see if you need anything.

I loaded up on some extra parts for my Little Giant automatic waterers and other
assorted small parts. They have decent prices on legbands too."
If you've been following the news of drought and failing crops around the country,

YAKIMA HAY - WEED FREE, ORGANICALLY MANAGED
We've been working with Clark Kramer in Yakima to bring over his
certified weed-free, organically managed grass/alfalfa mix.
(Weed-free is what you need for riding or packing into the National Forests.
Organically-managed means not having to worry about any unnatural chemicals impacting your animals' health.)
We bought this hay last year, and it was GORGEOUS!
We're looking at getting:
- 14 tons of FIRST CUTTING hay in late June - early July.
This is the highest-nutrition hay, and has less alfalfa.
On the down side, depending on moisture content (which is weather-dependent),
this hay could have inferior storage qualities.
- 28 tons of SECOND CUTTING hay around mid-August.
This has higher alfalfa content, and should store well.
We will be pricing the hay as follows:
hay cost + hauling cost + handling costs (the haulers have a conveyor belt!) + $1/bale (member) or $2/bale (non-members).
We estimate this as coming out to under $11 per bale to Co-op members, and under $12 per bale for non-Co-op members.
CONTACT growkingston@centurytel.net TO RESERVE YOUR HAY NOW!
This is a great price for great quality, but since the Co-op's "margin" is so small, we need to sell it all to make this work!
We do not yet have a commercial storage site, so most sales will be "off-the-truck".
(Arrangements can be made to deliver larger orders directly to your barn, although extra mileage and handling costs may be involved.)

Rob has already sold out his first order of Rainier Cherries, and is talking to a second supplier.

HAY HAY HAY
We've been working with Clark Kramer in Yakima to bring over a load of his
certified weed free, organically managed grass/alfalfa mix. We're looking at getting
2nd cutting hay which should be available around mid-August. Clark has quoted us a price
that works out to ~$8/bale for an 85# bale. That doesn't include shipping,
which we hear can double the price,
BUT WILL BE LOWER PER BALE IF WE CAN ORDER MORE!
Please let us know at growkingston@centurytel.net
how many bales (or tons) you would be interested in ordering and what your price point would be.
We will be pricing the hay as follows: hay cost + hauling cost + $1/bale (member) or $2/bale (non-members).
We do not yet have a commercial storage site, so all sales will be "off-the-truck",
though we are trying to arrange delivery of any orders over 5 tons directly to your site.
