Contact Site Manager Rebecca Ifland (rebeccaifland@gmail.com) for details.

  • Kitsap Forest and Bay Coalition is working to purchase Kitsap County holdings from Pope Enterprises. This is an Open Space issue, but also agricultural because, as the dry end of Kitsap County, we benefit from large areas that absorb rain instead of shedding it off.

  • ABOUT THE CO-OP

    • WHO WE ARE:
People living in the communities and countryside surrounding Kingston, WA.

    • WHAT BRINGS US TOGETHER:
We are interested in good-quality, reasonably-priced farm-related products; in sharing and supporting agricultural and gardening resources; in strengthening the ties between local consumers and local producers; and in maintaining the small-town character of our area.

    • WHAT WE'VE DONE TO DATE:
The Co-op provides an in-place structure which is available to support and legitimize efforts beneficial to agriculture in North Kitsap. Members can go thru the Co-op to establish new programs, to arrange group buys at wholesale prices, to sponsor educational seminars. (To see the timeline of the initial steps of becoming a legal entity in Washington State, you can look at our TIMELINE page.)

Through the ongoing efforts of several dedicated members, we have offered member group buys of potting soil, cover crop seed, irrigation materials, organic potato starts, and organic garlic starts.

We have established and continue to maintain the organically-managed Giving Garden, currently the largest source for local produce for the Sharenet Food Bank (But they still need as much as you can bring in!) We would like to thank the Kingston High School Honor Society for providing hard-working garden volunteers during Spring preparation and planting.

Through a generous grant from USDA NRCS, and the heroic efforts of numerous volunteers over multiple weekends in the fall of 2013, the Giving Garden now has a High Tunnel to assist in increasing summer crops, and extending the growing season further into the winter.

We have toured Llama Lips Farm (llamas, alpacas, spinning & weaving), Broken Ground Farm (market gardening, hoop houses), the late Watermark Farm (horse boarding), and Pete's Place (private garden and bamboo grove, surprise tour for Giving Garden volunteers). We have given multiple tours of the Giving Garden to a wide variety of interested parties.

We have arranged for talks on wine grapes, bee keeping, worm boxes, and the (since suspended) Hansville Farm Project, and have discussed cover cropping and other topics of interest.

We have established a relationship with a grower in Yakima for a source of organically-managed, certified weed-free, high quality, grass mix hay, which we have been bringing over in 7-ton lots for sale to Co-op members. (Go to the Products and Services ("Deals") page for details.)

We have started a Tool Loan program for hand tools, and for tools sometimes unavailable at local rental shops.

Local providers of agricultural products, with their contact information, are being listed, free of charge, on our PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ("Deals") page. If you need something that is not available locally or on the PRODUCTS AND SERVICES page, contact growkingston@centurytel.net to request a group buy or to receive information about an alternate source.

See our Classes page for links to classes available in Kitsap County and Western Washington in general. If you have a topic you'd like to speak on, or would like to have a visiting expert speak on, please contact growkingston@centurytel.net

Local and government resources and programs of interest, plus local gardening stores, farmers' markets, etc., are listed below on this page.

    • OUR NEXT GOALS:
      • We need more volunteers in the Giving Garden, above and beyond the handful of weekly faithful. Especially when summer arrives, and we tend to lose any high school volunteers. Consider coming one day a month - you would be very welcome!

We will be again requesting the assistance of the Kingston High School Honor Society to work on the 2019 garden.

        Contact Kinley to volunteer!

      • We would like to establish a few more raised beds in the Giving Garden. These beds increase soil depth, improve soil drainage, and save the backs of the volunteers.

      • We are seeking grant money and contributions to establish workable produce storage and handling facilities, storage for tools and irrigation equipment, and dedicated hay storage. We are making the present make-shifts work, but the arrangements are inefficient, and often an imposition on our volunteers.

      • We are not presently seeking to establish a store-front location. This option is, however, still available if Co-op members wish to volunteer to work on it.

      • We want to offer agricultural and animal supplies not otherwise available in the community. If we are able to buy in bulk, we can pass the savings on to Co-op members.

      • We want to identify and acquire additional tools for the Tool Loan program.

      • We will continue to provide free listings on our web page for local businesses providing agricultural materials and/or services.

We welcome your involvement and suggestions! E-mail to: growkingston@centurytel.net

    CO-OP MEETING MINUTES:
These minutes range from some of the earliest formative meetings, to the final stages of ratifying by-laws.

Since then, meetings have been conducted less formally; on-line in “chat” format, by group e-mail, or by meeting over other activities and presenting things to the group from there.

We are under the impression that this is working out. Few people are enamored of meeting for meeting’s sake, and most of us have busy lives. But we seem to be communicating what folks want to know, and hopefully, everyone knows that they, too, can start action going on a topic or activity of interest.

    Here are those early-day minutes.

WA State Dept of Revenue Farmers Page
The Department of Revenue (DOR) has created a site just for farmers and agricultural business (http://dor.wa.gov/farmers). The intent is to have one location where farmers can go for updated information on taxes, incentives, rules and other changes that affect them. DOR has been making a real effort to make information easily available to taxpayers, and this is one example.

Attached is a newsletter from DOR talking about the new webpage, in PDF or WORD 97-2003 format.

    • FARM RESCUE PROJECTS IN KITSAP COUNTY
      • Hansville Farm Project
Located in North Kitsap, this group is seeking community support and funding to acquire the old Pope and Talbot tree farm between Driftwood Keys and Buck Lake County Park, to establish community-owned organic farmland. Available land: up to 144 acres. They need volunteers interested in putting in time and effort for the welfare of our region, and donations to accumulate purchase funds and qualify for grant monies.
      • Petersen Farm near Silverdale
The Great Peninsula Conservancy group, in partnership with the estate of Gerald Petersen, has preserved 120 acres of the 167-acre Petersen Farm as a fully-functional, working farm. As you may know, farm land near Silverdale, WA has been profligately overbuilt and paved. This project retains some country in the area. It also allows extension of the Clear Creek Trail to the north, and protects the stretch of Clear Creek which runs directly thru the property.

Please help these outstanding projects, with time and / or money! There is a significant resurgence of interest in local food and local farms, but we need to preserve the farmland to support the interest!

    • Bainbridge Barter
      "Connecting neighbors for cash-less exchanges."
      Laura recommends this page!

    • USDA Food Desert Locator.
This is part of a national initiative to bring sources of healthy food into underserved areas. North Kitsap has no "food deserts", by this reckoning, although parts of Bremerton and Port Orchard are mapped. Unfortunately for those of us who are Walmart-phobic, it is the large, national chains that are being tapped to solve this problem.
